The following two examples relating to two screw ships contain more detailed indications as to the application of the provisions concerning the deduction for propelling-machinery spaces.

The scheme of calculation (page 57) indicates how to determine the portion of light and air spaces necessary for obtaining a propelling-power allowance of 32 % of the gross tonnage.

EXAMPLE 1 Cubic capacity of actual machinery space = 160 tons (453.26 m3). Total cubic capacity of space on or above the upper deck (light and air casings, etc.) = 65 tons (184.14 m3). Aggregate cubic capacity of hatchways = 25 tons (70.82 m3). | A. The owner does not request any space on or above the upper deck to be included in the gross tonnage and added to the actual machinery space. | B. The owner requests as much space as possible on or above the upper deck to be added to the actual machinery space and included in the gross tonnage, the latter not exceeding 1,600.00 tons (4,532.58 m3). | C. The owner requests the necessary cubic capacity of spaces on or above the upper deck to be included in the gross tonnage and added to the actual machinery space in order to obtain the 32 % deduction.

The cubic capacity of the actual machinery space is 10.21 % of the gross tonnage. Consequently, the deduction for propelling-machinery space will be 10.21/13 X 32/100 X 1,567.25 = 393.89 tons (10.21/13 X 32/1000 X 4,439.80 = 1,115.82 m3). | 32.89 tons (93.17 m3) of the space on or above the upper deck is added to the actual machinery space and included in the gross tonnage 160.00 + 32.89 = 192.89 tons (453.26 + 93.17 = 546.43 m3) is 12.06 % of the gross tonnage. Consequently, the deduction for propelling-machinery space will be 12.06/13 X 32/100 X 1,599.98 = 474.97 tons (12.06/13 X 32/100 X 4,532.51 = 1,345.52 m3). | 50.28 tons (142.44 m3) of the space on or above the upper deck is included in the gross tonnage and added to the actual machinery space 160.00 + 50.28 = 210.28 tons (453.26 + 142.44 = 595.70 m3). 13 % of the gross tonnage = 210.25 tons (595.60 m3). Consequently, the deduction for propelling-machinery space will be 32 % of the gross tonnage.

Aggregate cubic capacity of hatchways = 30 tons (84.99 m3). | A. The owner does not request any space on or above the upper deck to be included in the gross tonnage and added to the actual machinery space. | B. The owner requests as much space as possible on or above the upper deck to be added to the actual machinery space and included in the gross tonnage, the latter not exceeding 2,000.00 tons (5,665.72 m3). | C. The owner requests the total cubic capacity of space on or above the upper deck to be included in the gross tonnage and added to the actual machinery space.

The cubic capacity of the actual machinery space is above 13 % or more but less than 20 % of the gross tonnage. Consequently, the deduction for propelling-machinery space will be 32 % of the gross tonnage. | 69.88 tons (197.96 m3) of the space on or above the upper deck is added to the actual machinery space and included in the gross tonnage 360.00 + 69.88 = 429.88 tons (1,019.83 + 197.96 = 1,217.79 m3) is more than 20 % of the gross tonnage. Consequently, the deduction for propelling-machinery space will be 429.88 X 1.75 = 752.29 tons (1,217.79 X 1.75 = 2,131.13 m3). | 105 tons (297.45 m3) is included in the gross tonnage and added to the actual machinery space. 360.00+105.00 = 465.00 tons (1,019.83 + 297.45 = 1,317.28 m3) is more than 20 % of the gross tonnage. Consequently, the deduction for propelling-machinery space will be 465.00 Xl-75 = 813.75 tons (1,317.28 Xl.75 = 2,305.24 m3).
