Kwalificatieprofiel
A Master of Science in Policing is able to:
Professional Competencies
1. function in a complex, multidisciplinary, international or unpredictable environment of policing and governance
2. conduct sound academic research that is relevant for (inter)national aspects of policing and societal safety
3. produce ‘intelligence’ in terms of unfolding the likelihood of crime patterns
4. bring separate practical results and empirical findings of policing issues under a general conceptual heading or transform (comparative) academic research of a qualitative or quantitative nature into (alternative) strategies and scenarios of policing
Contextual Competencies
5. confer with authorities and switch between different legal and policing approaches
6. match and assess the outcomes of different sources of ‘intelligence’ (e.g. from analysts or community police officers with respect to forensic or tactical information)
7. analyse the influence of European structures and regulations on policing strategies
8. discern relevant variables in the interaction between the police and the societal environment (such as the influence of traditional and social media or expectations of citizens towards the police)
Social Competencies
9. assess the strategic performance of colleagues and the legitimacy of their recommendations for policing purposes
10. share academic policing knowledge and ‘intelligence’ with internal and external partners of different disciplines
11. substantiate strategic advice to authorities, colleagues or partners – in word or writing – also in a foreign language
12. deal with (inter)national cultural differences if it comes to networking in police matters
Individual Competencies
13. exhibit autonomy in the undertaking of academic writing (e.g. with regard to recommendations to the police or law enforcement organisation)
14. critically analyse new sources of information and convert them into original proposals for a strategic approach in policing
15. assess the utility and feasibility of the academic research for police strategies

Context, zelfstandigheid en verantwoordelijkheid
The Master of Science in Policing should be able to develop an independent academic vision on professional needs. He will conduct research into societal developments relevant to policing, leading to strategic recommendations, structural solutions and practical improvements that are not only profitable for the operational police officer or police leaders, but also contribute to the scientific development of policing.
Successful students on the MSc in Policing Programme will be able to:
– analyse empirical quantitative and qualitative data in a scientific manner
– carry out comparative research into particular and (inter)national aspects of policing
– demonstrate an independent and methodologically sound opinion on research findings
– evaluate the utility and feasibility of a number of policing concepts
– critically analyse new sources of information and convert them into original proposals for a strategic approach in policing
– discern relevant variables in the interaction between the police and the societal environment
– evaluate the impact of regulations or policies of international administrative bodies and institutions
– exhibit autonomy in the undertaking of extended academic writing
– communicate and motivate his/ her deliberations – in English – reflecting values and views of colleagues and partners
A MSc graduate in Policing is likely to be recruited for supportive tasks at a strategic level of policing, protection or public administration. His main quality will be the ability to:
– transform academic findings into operational recommendations, tactical scenarios, project plans or job devices;
– convert practical policing outcomes or investigative activities into managerial reports for police forces, justice authorities and public administration bodies;
– research and develop policing strategies that are also beneficial for police partners;
– carry out evaluations or case-studies as a basis for new policing concepts or organisational improvements;
– act as an advisor, discussant or negotiator for the decision-makers of the Police, other public agencies as well as private counterparts;
– play a role in international police co-operation.
The duties mentioned above performs the Master of Science in Policing within the scope of the following themes: Policing models, Police & Society, International Policing, scholarly research (master thesis). The activities per theme of the MSc in Policing are mentioned below.

Policing models – Criminality Strategies – Law Enforcement Strategies | 1. compare and evaluate (at least two) distinct policing models or the historical development of a particular policing model 2. critically assess aspects of a multidisciplinary approach related to intelligence-led policing or other policing concepts 3. critically review the literature on the chosen policing models 4. evaluate the utility of either the chosen criminality strategies or law enforcement strategies
Police & Society – Diversity Issues – Legitimacy Issues | Diversity Issues 1. critically analyse the (ir)relevancy of a diversified police force or law enforcement agency in their interactions with citizens or institutions 2. demonstrate a critical understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with the pluralisation of policing in a diversified society 3. substantiate opinions and recommendations with regard to the way the police handled or should handle a particular case or implemented a particular strategy
Legitimacy Issues 1. critically analyse relevant and clear-cut actors in the interaction between the police and their environment 2. critically assess minor or major threats to society and the legitimacy of police response in terms of either the quality or service delivery, political rightfulness or public support 3. design or evaluate a quality assurance project or a policing strategy that considers the scope and limits of a legitimate policing approach
International Policing – Theoretical, Strategic and Legal Models of Policing & Security in an International Context – Transnational Control of Terrorism and Organized Crime | 1. compare and apply distinct cross-border law enforcement strategies or criminal justice systems to cases of European (or international) police cooperation 2. critically analyse and assess the complexity of international policing approaches or interventions 3. identify and critically evaluate the opportunities and impediments of international cooperation between law enforcement agencies, appropriate stakeholders or other authorities 4. persuade the audience of a convergent scenario or a feasible design for European law enforcement cooperation in general or in particular by recommendations capable of being adopted
